On Saturday, March 20, Professor John Esposito, a prominent
professor of Islam in Georgetown University, visited Imam Hassan
Qazwini as he visited the city of Detroit. Imam Qazwini met with
him first and had a discussion. The Young Muslim Association and
the Islamic Center set up a special program in honor of
Professor Esposito. Many gathered at the Islamic Center to
listen to a lecture from the Professor.
The program started with a speech of gratitude and welcome to
Professor Esposito from Imam Qazwini. Imam Qazwini spoke about
Islam in America and how it has elevated and stood out because
of the actions of many devout and sincere people, like Professor
Esposito. Sayid Qazwini mentioned how Professor Esposito has
helped spread Islam in America and how he has educated so many
people about Islam through his speeches, books and other
writings. The Imam then presented Dr. Esposito with an award of
recognition for outstanding service for Islam. The Professor
accepted the award and then was invited to the podium. Professor
Esposito spoke about Islam, and how he became interested in
teaching it. He also spoke about the many challenges that
Muslims face in the West, and he explained how to deal with each
in a peaceful way. His speech was followed by a few minutes of Q
