Imam Qazwini attended a two-day
conference entitled, “International Prayer for Peace,” held
April 26-27 at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. There, he
participated in two panels entitled “Religions and the Culture
of Life” and “Living Together in a Globalized World.”
150 Muslim, Christian and Jewish
Scholars participated. The conference was attended by over 15
Cardinals, including Cardinal J. Francis Stafford of the
Apostolic Penitentiary in the Vatican. Many scholars from the
Muslim world attended, including the director of Al-Azhar
University, Dr. Muhammad Tayeb, and the leader of the African
American Muslim movement, Imam Warith D. Muhammad.
Discussion topics included peace
and war, spiritualizing politics without politicizing religion,
dialogue between religions and cultures, solving the crisis of
HIV, and religions facing terrorism.
Karen Hughes, Under Secretary of
State, opened the session as the keynote speaker on Wednesday.
The conference concluded on Thursday with a procession attended
by all leaders and guests including Cardinal Theodore McCarrick,
Archbishop of Washington.
This has been an annual effort
since 1986 initiated by Pope John Paul II in Assisi, Italy. |
